Jason has been with Namaste Solar for 15 years and has found so much meaning in his time here – from getting his electrical license to making life-long friendships. Learn about his journey here.
How long have you been at Namaste Solar and what’s your journey been like through the company?
I’ve been at Namaste Solar for 15 years, and I’m a residential field technician. I started with a commercial team in 2011 and worked on that team for a couple years. Then I had the chance to pivot into residential as an apprentice and did that for three years from 2013 to 2016. I then became a crew lead on the residential side for five years. When COVID came, I transitioned to a field technician role, and I’ve been doing that work since.
Why were you first interested in working here?
I had read about the company before I had actually applied for the company. And a couple of the guys that I had been doing some schooling with had also known some stuff about Namaste Solar. So, we had a pretty long conversation one day, and what they knew swayed me into looking into the company more and finally applying for a role here at Namaste Solar.
When you say, “what they knew,” was it the ownership structure or other things that were intriguing for you?
Yeah, the ownership structure and the cooperative structure was very interesting to me. And the solar thing was very interesting to me. I think that’s kind of what tipped me into figuring out what kind of work I wanted to do, and then once I realized how Namaste Solar was built, I was very much into that kind of company.
Where did you come from before?
I was kind of at a dead-end company doing apartment maintenance before I came here. I was doing a bunch of different things, which was kind of cool because I was learning a lot of skills, but realized that it wasn’t going to take me very far. So, I started looking into alternative energy and went all in with wind energy at Northeastern Junior College. But I realized that wind energy was in rural America at that time. I learned that solar could be done closer to town, and that was way more intriguing to me. And the work was very much aligned with what I had learned doing wind energy. I thought it was a perfect match. And then with the structure of the company, it was definitely a match made in heaven.
What motivates you to wake up and go to work?
I get a lot of satisfaction out of customer satisfaction. What we do is really cool, and I think a lot of people are excited for us to show. Once we show up, our customers are very accommodating, it’s really a lot of fun. I think it’s really unique how our customers treat us.
What is something about your job that most people don’t know about?
There’s a lot of one-on-one interactions with inspectors and that helps with who we are at Namaste Solar. Inspectors will come to a site and say, “Oh, it’s Namaste Solar. This’ll be easy.” I do bridge the gap between these hardened inspectors and Namaste Solar, and I feel like people who aren’t inspectors don’t understand that relationship.
What’s been one of your proudest moments working here?
Going through schooling here with Namaste Solar and then getting a licensure and becoming a crew lead. That was probably one of my biggest highlights here. I never knew I was going to be an electrician starting at this company, but slowly and surely I started working towards that path and eventually was able to cross that bridge. So that was a pretty proud moment.
How has Namaste Solar helped you develop your skills and career?
They have done so many things to support me. I’ve never felt so supported. That’s been since I started that anything you ask for is typically either dealt with or recognized, which I really appreciate.
There was a time where I was approached and was asked if I wanted to be an electrician, and what that would look like was laid out. It’s a big-time commitment as you’re enrolled in Independent Electrical Contractors (IEC) for four years, one day a week for nine months of the year. So, I never foresaw myself going back to school, but once I started, I was very much all in. Beyond licensure, it’s the support as far as the trainings that we’re offered here and there’s a lot more to the company than just coming and doing your daily job. There’s a lot of extracurricular activities like co-ownership and even hanging out with people after work because they’re friends not just colleagues. So, there’s a lot of things that have opened my eyes to a different way of working here at Namaste Solar.
What is the most unique part about working at Namaste Solar?
The transparency. The autonomy. Your voice is heard. I really, really appreciate that. It’s difficult having an idea or having something that you want to talk about and not being heard, but that does not happen here. If you speak up and you let the right people know, then your word goes a long way at Namaste Solar.
What advice would you give recent new hires?
Learn as much as you can about the company. Ask many questions. There are people who are going to answer them. And really start your career early. Try to figure out what you want to do, and go all in because it doesn’t take long to get there.
One of our core values is “Come as you are” and a part of that is working to build t a culture where people feel able to be their full selves at work. How have you experienced “Come as you are” at Namaste Solar?
That’s one of my favorite parts. I can have long hair. I can express myself fully. We get a lot of free reign here. So, I really love “come as you are” because I’m different, and I’ve realized I’m different. But then I found this different company, and now I’m part of a group of weirdos here. And I love that about the company. Here I blend in and in other places I would probably stand out.
I came to work the other day and somebody in the company had lost a family member. Well, I lost a family member earlier in the year, and we just sat there and cried together. It was weird and cool. It was a real human moment. There’s not many places you can have that.
What part of our mission do you most connect with?
The responsible use of solar energy part. I don’t like to waste anything, and I like to capture things that are valuable so that I can utilize them down the road. So, the responsible use of solar energy is kind of embedded in me. If I think it’s not going to work or something, I want to be a frank, open, and honest (FOH), not only with the company, but with the customer. So, I feel like that’s one that resonates with me pretty well.
What do you like to do when you’re not at work?
I’m married. So, I have a wife, and I have two dogs which I love so much. We like to travel, camp, hike, garden, and to be outdoors. We consider ourselves pretty active. So, anything outdoors we enjoy. And we like music and enjoy live music.
Where would you go on your dream vacation?
Somewhere pretty remote. I like to get off the beaten path and get away from people.
If you could pick one superpower, what would it be?
I want to fly. I would just love to fly.
