If your roof needs to be replaced within the next five years or so, it is recommended that you consider re-roofing at the time of your solar installation. This saves you the extra expense of removing the system and then installing it a second time. When an array is to be installed in conjunction with a new roof, the best way to attach the system to your roof is with hardware called standoffs (short steel posts that connect directly to the structural members of your roof). For most roofing materials, we attach the standoffs to the rafters/structural members before the top layer of roofing material is installed, seal around it with conventional Oatey flashings, and then return to finish the installation after the final roofing layer is on. Ideally, we can start planning your system when you hire your roofing contractor, and then work with that contractor to coordinate the roofing and standoff installations.
